Sleep apnea

Last updated: 2nd Sep 2025

Sleep apnea is a common and heterogeneous sleep disorder presenting in three forms: obstructive, central, and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most prevalent type. It is characterized by repeated episodes of upper airway collapse during sleep, leading to intermittent hypoxia and frequent arousals that disrupt sleep architecture.

How common is sleep apnea globally?

OSA is the most widespread sleep-related breathing disorder, affecting an estimated 936 million adults globally. Prevalence increases with age, obesity, and certain comorbidities, making it a significant public health concern.

What symptoms are associated with sleep apnea?

Most symptoms occur during sleep and include witnessed apneas, gasping or choking, frequent awakenings, and loud snoring. Daytime symptoms may include excessive tiredness, impaired concentration, mood disturbances, and headaches.

How does sleep apnea impact quality of life?

Sleep apnea can significantly impair daily functioning. Even mild cases are associated with reduced productivity, impaired cognitive performance, and diminished quality of life. Severity often correlates with the extent of functional impact.

What treatment options are available for sleep apnea?

Management strategies vary by severity. Lifestyle interventions, such as weight loss, smoking cessation, and reducing alcohol intake, can be effective in mild cases. For moderate to severe OSA, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy remains the gold standard, improving both symptoms and long-term outcomes.
