The atrial fibrillation better care (ABC) pathway for stroke prevention

Watch selected highlights from the live ‘atrial fibrillation better care (ABC) pathway for stroke prevention’ webinar where expect faculty discuss the evidence and benefits of implementing the ABC pathway (Avoid stroke, Better symptom management, and Cardiovascular and comorbidity risk reduction) into clinical practice. The ABC pathway is now recommended in several clinical guidelines, including the recent European Society of Cardiology (ESC) AF management guidelines.

Better symptom management – Professor Dhiraj Gupta highlights

What do the ESC 2020 guidelines recommend as first-line intervention for rate control in patients with AF?
In the instance that rate control therapy is ineffective for managing AF, what is the next step?
Does early intervention with ablation improve quality of life for AF patients?

Avoiding stroke and comorbidity management – Professor Gregory Lip highlights

The 2020 ESC Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of AF using the ABC pathway
What impact does adherence to the ABC pathway have on clinical outcomes for stroke prevention?

ABC pathway implementation – Professor Deirdre Lane highlights

Does real-world evidence demonstrate the benefit of mobile-health technology in an integrated care framework?

Q & A session highlights

How would you manage a patient with intracranial haemorrhage who is receiving oral anticoagulants?
In patients where ablation has been successful, how would you continue to manage their risk of stroke?
Is there a scenario where you would ever use anticoagulation and antiplatelet drugs together in patients with AF?
What is the biggest challenge to clinical implementation and adherence to the ABC pathway?

Professor Deidre Lane

Professor Deirdre Lane PhD, FRCP (Edin), FESC, FHEA
Professor Deirdre Lane is Professor of Cardiovascular Health at the University of Liverpool and an Adjunct Professor of Cardiovascular Health at Aalborg University, Denmark. Her main research interest is atrial fibrillation, focused on bleeding and stroke risk stratification and patient-centred research. She is a co-author of the CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores. Her research also examines how AF affects quality of life and psychological well-being, patients’ perceptions of AF and medication adherence. She is a member of the Task Force for the 2020 European Society of Cardiology guidelines on the management of AF and the 2018 American College of Chest Physicians guidelines on antithrombotic therapy in AF patients. Her h-index is 91 and she has co-authored >300 peer-reviewed publications. She is currently rated as one of the top 10 world experts in atrial fibrillation by Expertscape.
